Crewe Alexandra's ability to score late goals is no accident, according to assistant manager Ryan Dicker. Half of the Alex's eight goals so far this season have come after the 85-minute mark, demonstrating what Dicker describes as the squad's collective belief and determination.
The most recent example came in midweek when Reece Hutchinson levelled against Walsall in the 92nd minute. Earlier in the campaign, Josh March scored a 95th-minute winner at Crawley. Those late goals have yielded four points and progression in the Carabao Cup.
Dicker, who works alongside manager Lee Bell, said the pattern reflects the character of the group. "It's not coincidence," he explained. "The lads are together, they never give up, and they believe in each other. They know they've got quality, and the late goals show what the group is all about. They're going to be a handful throughout this season."
Joel Ewusi makes history
Among the season's late strikes was Joel Ewusi's goal at Barnsley, which made him the youngest ever Crewe scorer. March has netted three goals in four games and Dicker singled out the striker for praise, describing him as "a terrific asset".
"He sets the tone for everybody else," Dicker added. "How he trains, how he applies himself, how hard he works – it's a catalyst for everybody else behind him."
