Cumberland Arena in Crewe will reopen to residents on Monday 12 October after a major redevelopment of the community sports and wellbeing venue.
The transformation has been delivered by Everybody Health and Leisure in partnership with Cheshire East Council, with funding from the Government's Local Regeneration Fund, previously known as the Towns Fund.
The improved arena includes a new artificial 3G pitch, a fully equipped gym, a covered spectator stand, additional car parking and secure cycle shelters.
Three new multipurpose studio spaces will support fitness classes, community activities and targeted health and wellbeing programmes. Inclusive cycling activities will also form part of the expanded offer.
New facilities at Cumberland Arena
The new gym will offer health-focused access during the day and evening access for members. The operators say the arrangement is intended to welcome both beginners and experienced gym users.
Everybody Health and Leisure will use the new facilities to deliver One You Cheshire East programmes, including Active Lives, Re-shape, Be Smoke Free and Stand Strong.
The venue will also host community learning, health workshops and development programmes. Flexible rooms will be available for meetings, community events, business functions and private hire.
Thomas Barton, chief executive of Everybody Health and Leisure, said: "We're excited to welcome the community back to Cumberland Arena this October."
He added: "The transformed venue is much more than a sports facility. It is a place where people can get active, improve their health, learn new skills, meet new people and enjoy a wide range of community activities.
"We look forward to seeing Cumberland Arena become a thriving hub for local residents, clubs and organisations in Crewe."
Official opening planned for December
The arena will begin welcoming residents again on 12 October, while an official opening is planned for December once the final work has been completed.
A further phase is due to start in spring 2027, when the athletics track will be relaid. Crewe and Nantwich Athletic Club, which is based at the arena, has welcomed the planned investment.
Councillor Mick Warren, Cheshire East Council's cabinet member for housing, planning and regeneration, said the reopening marked a new chapter for the facility.
He said: "The reopening marks the beginning of a new chapter for Cumberland Arena and represents a major investment in local facilities and the health and wellbeing of our communities.
"The arena is now a really modern and welcoming facility, and a further example of Crewe's ongoing regeneration programme being delivered."
Tony Davison, chair of Crewe Town Board, said: "The transformation of this much-loved community asset has been significant, and it is great news for the town and wider area that these new facilities can now be enjoyed.
"I look forward to the second stage of the arena's development being completed next year, and to seeing this investment leave a lasting legacy for the town."
Crewe Town Board oversees projects supported by the Local Regeneration Fund in the town.
