Crewe Alexandra moved to the top of League Two after a 1-0 victory at Swindon, with Jordan Gibson scoring his third goal in three games.
Manager Lee Bell's side secured the win at the Nigel Eady County Stadium through Gibson's well-taken finish on the hour mark. The goal came after substitute Conor Thomas provided a visionary pass to Josh Marsh, who found Gibson arriving in the penalty area. Gibson placed his shot past Swindon goalkeeper Conor Ripley to settle the match.
The early kick-off saw Crewe leapfrog rivals who had fixtures later in the day, moving to 18 points. Salford and Barnet were scheduled to play after Crewe's victory, but the win took Bell's side to the summit on the points tally available at that time.
Defensive Performance
Crewe's defence proved decisive throughout. Tom Booth, the goalkeeper, was called upon for only a couple of meaningful saves across the 90 minutes, with centre-backs Stephenson and Offord keeping Swindon's main threat Aaron Drinan largely contained apart from one back post header in the first half.
The visitors could have extended their advantage in the closing stages. Matus Holicek broke through late on but saw his low shot saved by Ripley's legs. Minutes later, after breaking the offside trap, Holicek turned creator and picked out March, whose low drive was also saved.
Unbeaten Run
The win extends Crewe's unbeaten run in League Two to ten matches, a club record stretching back to the 1953/54 season.
The first half at Swindon was disrupted by frequent stoppages and offered few clear chances for either side. Swindon midfielder Ollie Clarke was booked in the opening 15 minutes for a high foul on Owen Lunt. Crewe had an early corner but struggled to establish rhythm early on, though Gibson did have a set-piece header go off target.
Swindon's best chance of the match came in the second half when Aaron Drinan's header from a deep cross was pushed out by Booth at the far post.
Crewe's breakthrough came after manager Bell introduced three substitutions just before the hour mark, with Thomas, Holicek and Agius replacing Tabiner, Thibaut and White. A minute later, Thomas's ball found Marsh racing through, and his cutback picked out Gibson for the decisive goal.
