Almost 148,000 new food waste caddies have been delivered to homes across Cheshire East as preparations for weekly collections enter their final phase.
Cheshire East Council says a further 38,000 outdoor caddies are scheduled to arrive over the next few weeks. The authority expects to confirm the service’s start date by mid-October, once deliveries are complete and new collection rounds have undergone final testing.
What residents should expect
New bin calendars will be published online when the start date is confirmed. These will show whether a household’s usual collection day is changing.
Residents in flats or shared accommodation containing three or more flats will use communal food waste bins, which are expected to be delivered during October.
Once weekly food waste collections begin, general-waste black bins will move to a three-weekly schedule. Silver recycling collections and garden-waste collections for subscribers will continue as normal.
Council asks residents to keep caddies safe
Councillor David Jefferay, the council’s cabinet member for environment, sustainability and waste management, said the authority had reached the final delivery phase following work on its depot, collection rounds and vehicles.
He asked residents who have already received a caddy to keep it safe and watch for further updates.
Free kitchen caddies available
A limited number of smaller kitchen caddies are available free from Cheshire East libraries and household waste recycling centres. Residents do not need to call ahead, although weekend and bank-holiday visits to recycling centres must be booked.
The weekly service is being introduced under the Government’s Simpler Recycling requirements and is intended to reduce the amount of food waste sent for disposal.
